I. Top area – search area
“fly to” 3d buildings (most major cities) /street view
II. Bottom area – layers – always changing, can turn them off and on (don’t have too many on at one time), have to zoom to see certain layers
examples:
cloud cover, doplar radar
borders and labels
alternate place names
gallery
global awareness (hot spots, issues of the day) – Darfur
III. Places – where guided tours reside (KLM – keynote mark-up language)
tours are written in HTML by anyone
example: Odysseus’ journey (Google sketch-up for model)
preferences/touring- for speed
always check “on” show balloon when tour is paused
lesson – scavenger hunt in Paris
Great Pyramids – tour with discussion of why built there
finding tours
1. earth.google.com – gallery
2. Google – advanced search – search under file type kml, kmz
example: all these words: baseball parks
file type: kml
need to download – save link as – automatically opens up
and stores in my places
Google Sky (planet icon)

In reviewing the day, I am once again reminded of the importance of being mindful of both content and process when using technology. I am overwhelmed by the content – not just about how to use the applications -blogs, delicious, etc, but mostly about the immense amount of content that is unleashed when we use them. It is so important to have a process for dealing with it all. Delicious is a perfect example. We did the upload before I was really able to prepared the bookmarks as well as I wanted. I would like to have had the time to do that “process” – creating bookmark names that would upload smoothly as tags. I am reminded, too, that there is no “right way” to do alot of these things – there may be a couple of right ways and it is up to the individual to figure out the way that works for them. Finally, I am reminded of a metaphor that was used at the last teacher training I went to. It was at the Federal Reserve in SF and it was designed to train teachers to run a student simulation called the International Economics Seminar. The facilitator said that we would feel like we were drinking from a fire hose for most of the time. That’s a bit how I felt today but I know I won’t drown.

I am keeping a list of “do’s” and “don’t’s” that I will hopefully review as I begin implementing what I am learning.

One of the “do’s” is having advance reading, like the homework we had for Day 1 of Summercore. It was good because I had options.

Choosing

I chose chapters that seemed the most practical. I highlighted websites that I would like to visit soon.
